Running for a Cause: Tara Dower’s Epic Journey to Support Girls on the Run

Ultrarunner Tara Dower set out on an ambitious mission to break a record on the Appalachian Trail.  She ran the entire Appalachian Trail, a grueling 2,90 miles, in just 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes, breaking the previous record by 13 hours.  But this incredible accomplishment wasn’t just about personal achievement.  Tara set out on this journey to raise awareness and funds for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit organization that empowers young girls through running and character development programs.

What started as a goal to raise $20,000 turned into something much bigger.  By the time Tara finished her trek, she had raised over $46,000 for Girls on the Run, more than doubling her original target AND beat a world record at the same time!

The Record-Breaking Journey

The Appalachian Trail is known for its tough terrain, unpredictable weather, and sheer mental challenge.  Most people take months to complete the hike, but Tara, with her incredible endurance and determination, tracked the trail in just over 40 days.  That’s an average of over 50 miles a day – an impressive feat on its own, let alone in the context of the Appalachian Trail’s mountains, rivers, and forests.  Tara was not only focused on finishing the trail but doing so in record time.  Her final time of 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes beat the previous record by a stunning 13 hours, solidifying her place in trail-running history.

But for Tara, this run wasn’t just about setting records – it was about making a real difference.  Through her journey, she brought attention to Girls on the Run, an organization that works to empower girls by fostering confidence, physical activity, and emotional resilience through running.

Girls on the Run: Empowering the Next Generation

Every dollar Tara raised goes directly to supporting Girls on the Run programs.  GOTR provides young girls with the opportunity to participate in a fun supportive environment where they can learn about teamwork, confidence, and self-respect – all through running.

The nonprofit’s curriculum promotes physical activity, emotional well-being, and social development through running-based programs.  It is about far more than crossing the finish – its about building confidence, fostering friendships, and teaching valuable life skills.
