Breath of Fresh Air: American Heart Association [AHA]
“No beauty shines brighter than that of a good heart.”
Shanina Shaik
February is the unofficial ambassador of love with Valentine’s Day smack dab in the middle of the month. Whether you like it or not, the most mundane things are subject to heart-shaped reinvention and almost everything gets doused in a thick, sticky layer of sappiness. Smittens anyone?
In keeping with the theme while avoiding the obnoxious pitfalls of the holiday, I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce you to this months featured nonprofit, American Heart Association (AHA). It is American Heart Month after all.
Prior to its inception in 1924, people with heart disease were written off as lost causes with no chance at survival. Perceiving that ignorance as unacceptable, a group of like-minded researchers gathered to collaborate on an investigation into the causes of heart disease. The American Heart Association was founded shortly after.
Since then, AHA has grown into an international powerhouse of heart health advocacy with over 33 million volunteers and supporters dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. They have invested more than an impressive $4.1 billion toward scientific research. Here’s a fun fact: that’s more than any other organization outside of the federal government! What is equally as profound is that some of the most essential and customary medical advances have been financed through the assistance of AHA, such as the external defibrillator, implantable pacemakers, artificial heart valve replacements and CPR to name a few.
Clearly, AHA can’t do it alone, depending on fundraising and donations to continue to fund scientific breakthroughs. The good news is that there are so many ways to help. One option is participating in a Heart Walk. Actually, that’s how Boulder Blimp got involved with AHA. We assisted the Oregon & SW Washington chapter in the creation of their inflatable archway to mark the starting line of their 2018 Heart Walk course. Because we know the strain that finances can put on a philanthropic organization, we offered AHA special pricing, as we do for all of our nonprofit clients who order our custom designed inflatables.
There’s a wealth of information, including amazing articles and testimonials, that can be found on their website here. Drop by when you have a moment and see how you can contribute your time and/or money to this benevolent cause. As always, it is a pleasure working with groups that make this world a better place for all.
Well, that’s a wrap, folks! Stay tuned for the next installment of Breath of Fresh Air coming up next month. I wonder who the spotlight will turn to next! Will it be YOU?
